Women Inspired at Girls Summit03/03/08
Saturday, March 1, 2008 was a whirlwind of fun and educational workshops for the middle school girls in Sarasota County. The fifth annual Girls Summit was held on the campus of Sarasota High School. This year’s event was collaboratively hosted by Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County, Community Youth Development, The School Board of Sarasota County, Coastal Behavioral Healthcare, Inc., Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, Inc., The Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, and Big Brothers /Big Sisters of the Sun Coast, Inc. Additional sponsorship was provided by the Sarasota Rotary Foundation and The Carlie Brucia Memorial Fund.
This year’s event featured keynote speaker Katie Mathews, a senior at Venice High School, who spoke poignantly about her experience of being paralyzed in an auto accident last year to becoming this year’s home coming queen; as well as and Kitty Heusner, Ph.D., who inspired all in attendance to tap their own creativity to solve problems in everyday life. With 170 girls from all corners of the county in attendance, the girls were able to choose 3 different workshops included a wide variety of interesting topics such as career choices, leadership skills, entrepreneurship, yoga, dating/relationships, dance, drama, nutrition, cooking and many more. Free transportation, event t-shirts, door prizes and lunch was provided.
Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County is dedicated to “inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold” and fulfills its mission of empowering girls aged six and up to be self-confident, responsible and well-rounded individuals by delivering research-based, age-appropriate, after-school and summer educational and sports programs. In the past two years, Girls Inc. has served over 2,000 girls at its facility and throughout the Sarasota County School System.
