National Award: Outstanding Affiliate of 200804/09/08
Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County recently received national recognition as the first recipient of the Excellence in Action Award – Outstanding Affiliate of 2008. The award was presented March 31, 2008 at the national Girls Incorporated conference in Newport Beach, CA. Girls Incorporated of Sarasota was the only agency to achieve this award from among 83 Girls Incorporated member organizations (77 in US, 6 in Canada).
The Excellence in Action award was created to recognize those organizations that have achieved the Standards of Operation, and then went beyond these standards to a level of true excellence. For their award, Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County received $1,000, a specially designed crystal vase, and the approved usage of the “Seal of Excellence” logo on their letterhead, publications and website.
The application process was very intense, requiring significant organizational skills and the collection of multiple documents and resources. The application materials compiled by the agency’s staff and board provided a clear picture of the agency’s current and future status as a successful organization experiencing positive growth. The personal interviews with staff, board and girls all revealed an excitement for the organization and its services to girls and their community.
Since its beginning 35 years ago, Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County has experienced periods of significant growth and also significant challenges. In addition to new leadership, over the past five years the agency has experienced innovative programming strategies, as well an increase in fundraising efforts and community marketing efforts. The staff and board have developed a plan for maximum service to the girls within their community – and they are continually striving to grow the program options offered while also reaching more girls.
Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County vision statement: We see empowered girls in environments that are nonsexist, positive, supportive, accessible, resourceful, challenging, realistic, equitable, and inviting. We serve these girls through programs that are intentional and compensatory, innovative and active, age-appropriate and relevant.
Girls Incorporated is a national nonprofit youth organization dedicated to inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. With roots dating to 1864, Girls Inc. has provided vital educational programs to millions of American girls, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas. Today, innovative programs help girls confront subtle societal messages about their value and potential, and prepare them to lead successful, independent, and fulfilling lives. Girls Inc. serves 800,000 young women ages 6 to 18 at over 1,000 sites nationwide and in Canada.
