Good things are happening at Girls Incorporated of Sarasota. Congressman Vern Buchanan stopped by Girls Incorporated for a tour to learn more about the scope of services offered to Sarasota’s school aged girls and to view their new MicroSociety® program in action. The MicroSociety® program at Girls Inc incorporates real world experiences into their curriculum and helps students apply what they learn in the classroom to real life. The Girls Inc. program integrates girls ages 6 – 14 into the miniature society. While touring, Buchanan wanted to learn more about the needs of the girls and families and voiced interest in supporting Girls Inc. Each business venture on the tour was prepared to present their business goals and questions to the Congressman on topics from profit margins to taxes. “It has been said that children are 25% of our population but 100% of our future,” said Buchanan. “Programs such as these will help young people realize their full potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens.” Buchanan then met with Girls Inc. Board Members, staff and girls to discuss their efforts to secure future funding. “I grew up in a blue-collar home with five brothers and sisters so I understand the challenges working families face,” Buchanan said.
One of the Congressman’s top legislative priorities is protecting the environment, which is vital to Florida’s economy and quality of life. While touring Girls Incorporated Congressman Buchanan was approached by 2 young Girls Inc. members who are concerned about the environment and recycling. He was asked to sign their petition in favor of recycling and gladly signed their hand made petition. The Congressman also discussed education outside of academics, self esteem and the ties to the National Girls Incorporated programs.
The self-made businessman is a respected leader in Florida’s business community. He chaired both the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce. Buchanan toured the entire campus observing “Dream Harbor”, Girls Inc’s society within a society. Lead by the elected mayor of Dream Harbor Alexis Smith, the Congressman connected the dots with the girls relating their new after school business and teamwork challenges to real life workplace issues. Buchanan shared a story about his sister’s restaurant success with the crew of young culinary entrepreneurs preparing the day’s lunch in the Girls Inc’s full commercial kitchen. The average daily attendance is approximately 150 girls in their afterschool program.
Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County is dedicated to “inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold” and fulfills its mission of empowering girls aged six and up to be self-confident, responsible and well-rounded individuals by delivering research-based, age-appropriate, after-school and summer educational programs. In the past two years, Girls Inc. has served over 2,000 girls at its facility and throughout the Sarasota County School System.
