Girls Inc. Has Much to Celebrate

Girls Incorporated of Sarasota County had many things to celebrate at their 20th annual Celebration Luncheon on April 16th at the Ritz-Carlton. This year’s Celebration Luncheon, chaired by Chris Pfahler, featured the presentations of the “She Knows Where She’s Going” and Board of Trustees’ “Visionary Award” honoring outstanding individuals for their contribution to our community.

This year Girls Inc. was thrilled to have 820 guests in attendance at their annual luncheon. The “She Knows Where She’s Going” Award was presented to two amazing role models. The first recipient was Susan Danis, Executive Director of the Sarasota Opera. The Sarasota Opera recently re-opened its door at the beginning of March after a $20 million renovation of its 1926 historic Opera House. Not only was the successful $60 million campaign Susan’s idea but the opera’s budget has grown from $3.2 million to more than $8 million during her tenure.

The second recipient was Judi Gallagher, a multi-media chef and culinary consultant business owner. Judi spices up our television and radio airwaves as well as writes for several local publications. She does this all while generously seasoning the culinary world with her consulting business for high-end restaurant clientele like Beach Bistro, Fleming’s, Roy’s, Venture Hotels and others.

The 2008 Board of Trustees’ “Visionary Award” winner was presented to long time Girls Inc. supporter Jaime Wallace. Joining the firm of Icard, Merrill in 1985, Ms. Wallace became the first woman shareholder of the firm in 2006. Jaime was the first chair of the Girls Incorporated’s “Celebration Luncheon” in 1989, has served as President of Girls Incorporated’s Foundation Board and served on the National Girls Incorporated. Board of Trustees. All 3 women are strong role models whose contributions to our community are an inspiration to us all.

Girls Inc was also proud to announce that Alexis Smith is the Girls Inc. 2008 “Girl of the Year”. Alexis is a blossoming leader as the first mayor and post master of Dream Harbor in their MicroSociety program. MicroSociety is an innovative program design whereby children create a microcosm of the real world in an afterschool setting. Alexis was also presented with the Girls Incorporated “National Young Woman of the year” (age 9-11 year old category) award.

In celebration of the 20 years of Celebration Luncheons the former honorees were called to the stage. The former honorees include men and women who have distinguished themselves in the fields of education, real estate, hospitality, banking, construction, publishing, journalism, government, fine arts as well as in the community and who serve as role models for the girls at Girls Inc. Over 50 past honorees were in attendance and acknowledged during the luncheon as they joined the Girls Inc. choir in singing “Just One Person”, an inspirational song about having someone believe in you.
